First Betrayal
Would you please elaborate on the comment you made last week about something going wrong with the layers we build on top of our essence or else we wouldn't need to be here [in this class]?
Your personality went "wrong" from the point of view of society. What was active and open when you were a child was the thymus gland (heart area). You closed that by creating a personality. You close it even further by getting a life. When you begin to give in to the demands of the world, when you commit your great betrayal (this is a technical term for the moment when you decide to betray your essence), there is a moment--anywhere from between three and five years of age, or as late as seven if you are fortunate--when you find yourself at a crossroads, when you have to decide to copy the older person and you realize if you do that you will have it better, things won't be as complex, but you also know it is not the way you are. So that's your first betrayal.
You begin the process that will culminate in the sleep of the thymus gland. After puberty it is asleep. If you did not consolidate that program (your mask, personality), if you did not make it waterproof, then you expose the essence, that thing you were covering. So you did something wrong in that respect, in terms of the society. But it was something good as far as the development of the essence goes. When it wakes up again, you begin to feel like you felt as a child, and you are just as vulnerable and open as a child. That's when you realize you have not been having real emotions, because you do. Almost everything we call emotions is simply a reaction.
Koyote the Blind, January 2008

Koyote the Blind is an Hablador (Master Storyteller) in the 9th century Toltec tradition. He is also the one responsible for bringing the Aka Dua to the public in the Western Hemisphere.
First Betrayal is excerpted from the book Teachings of a Toltec Survivor by Koyote the Blind. The book is a record of the magically created performance of Koyote during the twelve weeks between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice in 2007.
